New Indiana Caverns Show Cave Opening Date Approaching
With the proposed opening date looming, folks at Indiana Caverns are working hard to complete the new tourist attraction.
Since the end of May 2012, NSS cavers Gary Roberson, Terry (Dog) Crayden and Rand Heazlitt have been busy developing a small portion of the Indiana’s Binkley Cave system, the 11th longest cave in the U.S., as a new show cave, Indiana Caverns.
Once complete, the tour will include a walking section as well as a boat ride, with about half of the 600 meter (2,000 foot) lighted section accessible on the water.
It has waterfalls, it has a boat ride, it has ice age bones, it has a lot of formations, heights and depths, the kind of things that make a cave exciting for a person to go through, Gary Roberson, Indiana Caverns Developer
Unfortunately, soon after the spot aired a thief broke into the cave and stole expensive equipment including a large welder, a barrel fan and thousands of feet of welding cable.
Despite the setback, which is expected to halt construction for a week, developers are still hoping to get the cave open in May.
Additionally, anyone with information on the robbery is asked to contact Indiana State Police.
