International Union of SpeleologyIran is the latest country to become a member of the International Union of Speleology (UIS) after receiving a majority vote during last month’s 2013 International Congress of Speleology in Brno.

Gaining 39 of 41 votes, Iran joins 56 other countries from around the world working to develop and coordinate international collaboration in the scientific, technical, cultural and economic aspects of speleology.

As a first step, five members Iran’s national organization, the Association of Iranian Cavers and Speleology, participated in the congress.

There is hope the Iran’s membership in the UIS will promote science being done by Iranian cavers and help to raise global awareness of Iran’s caves, with the goal of one day adding some of its caves to the World Heritage List.
