February 26, 2013 / Abkhazia, Asia

The Ukrainian Speleological Association is accepting applications from cavers interested in participating in 2013 Call of the Abyss project, an ongoing international expedition to visit the world’s deepest caves in the Arabika Massif of Abkhazia.

Since beginning in 2000, the Call of the Abyss project has involved some 50 cavers from 11 nations.

This year’s goals include visiting Krubera-Voronja, the deepest cave in the world at -2196 meters (-7205 feet) deep. The plan is to undertake ecological work in the main branch, and exploration/engineering work in the -1697 meter (-5566 foot) deep Nekuybishevskaya branch.

Other tasks on the agenda include further exploration inside the -500 meter (-1640 foot) deep Berchilskaya cave and the -135 meter (-443 foot) deep Martel’s Cave.

This summer’s month-long undertaking runs from July 25th to August 25th.
