Fall Seriously Injures Novice French Caver

December 10, 2012 / France, Europe

A novice caver is recovering in a French hospital after a 5 meter (16 foot) fall while on an introductory caving trip in the ancient water system of the city of Nancy.

The victim, a 20-year-old woman, was part of a group of six from the alpine club who were visiting old tunnels, now converted for caving training, yesterday afternoon when the accident occurred. While standing on a metal small platform, the woman stepped into a hole she had forgotten was there and fell to a second platform below.

Recognizing the signs of a serious injury, severe pain, tingling in the legs and spitting blood clots, the experienced members immediately sent for help.

First responders arrived about an hour and a half after the accident occurred and immediately began preparing for the extraction of the victim who was eventually removed from the cave on a specialized stretcher around 11:00pm.
