Carlsbad Caverns National Park will hold its 56th annual Bat Flight Breakfast this Saturday July 20, 2013.

To attend this free event, visitors are invited to meet in the park’s Bat Flight Amphitheater starting at 4:30 am to await the return of Mexican free-tailed bats to the cave.

To help encourage folks to arrive early, the first 120 participants will receive free tickets for one of two guided lantern-lit tours Main Corridor route of the cave. The strenuous tours, which involves a hike down steep inclines for more than an hour, leave at 6:00 and 6:30 am after most of the bats have returned.

As even more incentive, the first 120 visitors will also receive free entry into Carlsbad Cavern for the day.

During the event, park rangers will be available to answer questions, Carl S. Bat, Carlsbad Caverns’s mascot, will make an appearance and at 7:00 am park rangers will conduct a rappelling and rope climbing demonstration over the entrance.

Not complete with breakfast, Carlsbad Caverns Trading restaurant will selling meals—a breakfast burrito (meat or vegetarian), choice of fruit, yogurt parfait, and a beverage—for $7.00 starting at 4:30 am. This year visitors can carry their breakfast with them to the amphitheater.

Started in 1957 as a way to encourage visitors to see the bats’ morning return flight, the Bat Flight Breakfast contrasts the dusk mass exodus of bats with small numbers of bats diving in clusters into the cave entrance.
