A Busy Spring Break for Carlsbad Caverns National Park
Carlsbad Caverns National Park had a busy spring break season with 46,064 visitors to the park during the month of March, an increase of 2 percent for the same period last year.
As a result, the total visitation in the first quarter of 2012 surpassed last year’s with 74,188 visitors.
During the two busiest weeks of spring break, all the guided cave tours sold out, including the Kings Palace tours that were added to the schedule. Paul Bauer, park management assistant
While its hard to determine the reason for an increase in visitation to the park, the fact that New Mexico is celebrating its centennial may be a cause this summer with some people opting to travel more in their home state due to the many events.
How much people have to spend on travel is always a factor. Fire occurring around the state – as happened last year – and extreme weather can deter people from traveling or induce them to travel to different places. It remains to be seen, but perhaps we’ll see statewide more visitors coming to New Mexico. Paul Bauer, park management assistant
April could also prove to be a good month for visitation at the park, with the first week already showing strong numbers.
