An elderly villager discovered a previously unknown cave in the jungles of the Thung Saliam district in Thailand’s Sukhothai province.

The villager, 60-year-old Pankaew Thinakruea, recently found the cave while he was gathering food and herbs on Do Mae Tan mountain. Having collected herbs, bamboo shoots, mushrooms and other wild plants in the area for more than 50 years, Thinakruea was quite surprised to stumble across the cave, hidden by thick vegetation.

Villagers who went to see the cave took three hours to climb to the entrance where they used bamboo ladders to climb down into the cave. Once inside the cave’s narrow entrance widened into a large chamber, estimated to be about 50 x 100 meters (164 x 328 feet), filled with beautiful stalactites and stalagmites.

Mr. Pankaew has pledged to help conserve his magnificent discovery.
