Two people had to be rescued from Iowa’s Maquoketa Caves State Park after becoming stuck.

The man, Logan Eliasen, 20, of Port Byron, Illinois became trapped around 6:45 pm on Friday along with Emma Thomson, also 20, while crawling through a narrow part of Wye Cave.

The pair were discovered around 8:00 pm by visitors who alerted park staff.

The woman was rescued about 11:40 pm that night, while the man was eventually rescued around 3:30 pm on Saturday, some 20 hours after initially getting stuck.

In order to release him rescue crews had to chisel away rock. All the while he was administered oxygen and an IV.

The man spent one night in hospital for dehydration, while the woman was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Home to more than a dozen caves, Maquoketa Caves State Park was recently reopened to visitors after being closed since 2009 due to fears of white-nose syndrome.
