Allen Maddox, caver and lone commenter on our poll this past February that asked “What age is old enough to go caving?“, has written an excellent article on YOU Cave about a recent caving trip he took with his two grandsons.

Titled, Sharing One of My Favorite Caves With My Grandsons, the article recounts the excitement and feeling of adventure as the kids, aged 5 to 9, explored the underground ecosystem.

You would have thought it was Christmas the way these kids were acting. They were so excited about seeing every part of the cave and sharing it with each other.Allen Maddox

For anyone on the fence about taking kids caving, it is a great read to help you make up your mind.

My youngest son started caving at age 3. I routinely take children on caving trips.

I have been a cave guide for 7 years and have found in most cases that kids are the best spelunkers. They take you seriously when you tell them why calcite should not be touched and do their best to abide by it. Many adults will hear you, but still think it’s ‘no big deal’. Not to mention that kids are much better climbers than most adults.
