Human Skull in Sinkhole Prompts Homicide Investigation
Police are investigating at a Kentucky sinkhole after a human skull was spotted inside on Tuesday.
WAVE 3 News reports that it was found by a maintenance worker after he stopped for a break to show his granddaughter the Franklin County sinkhole, which recently grew deeper—it is estimated to be 4.5 meters (15 feet) deep. They were shocked to see the skull inside.
Police were contacted and an excavator was brought in to dig up the hole to see if more human remains could be found. Meanwhile the skull was sent to the coroner’s office to determine its age.
There have been Indian artifacts found on this farm. There’s a cemetery on the other side of this farm. So we don’t know whether this is something that’s 100s of years old or if it’s something that’s 20 to 40 years old. We really don’t know that. But we’ve got to process this like a homicide scene. That’s our goal to preserve evidence, recover and photograph extensively to get the most that we can get. Pat Melton, Franklin County Sheriff
