South Dakota’s Jewel Cave National Monument is once again offering Wild Caving Tours over the winter.

Limited to five participants, Jewel Cave’s Wild Caving Tour is a three to four-hour adventure that takes would be cavers off the manicured trails of the cave and into areas where they must scramble over breakdown, chimney between cave walls and crawl through tight passages.

The tour is strenuous, and all cavers are required to fit through a 21 by 61 centimeter (8.5 by 24 inch) opening.

The 2014 dates are for the trips are January 17th, February 21st, and March 21st. The tour begins at 11:30 am and concludes around 4:00 pm.

Reservations are required and can be made up to 28 days in advance of the listed dates; however, the reservation deadline for each date is the Wednesday prior to the scheduled tour.

Participants must be eighteen years of age or older; however, young adults sixteen or seventeen are allowed on the tour with parental approval.

Wild caving tours are an exciting way for visitors to experience the thrill of trekking through a frontier landscape for the first time. Although a public tour, the sense of excitement to see something strange gradually become familiar is an awesome experience for many guests. We hope some of our local outdoor enthusiasts will take advantage of these tour opportunities. Bradley Block, Jewel Cave National Monument Acting Superintendent
