With the unabated march of white-nose syndrome across North America, two sets of gear—one clean and one WNS—seem to be a necessity for many cavers.
For this week’s Ask Cavers question, we’re curious to find out how many duplicate sets of gear you own and, if not for WNS, why you have them.
Let us know in the comments below.

Three…one WNS, and two sets for KY
Not including cave clothes, I have 15+ complete sets of caving gear. I use it for educational outreach activities for community groups and schools.
Living on the west coast, I am fortunate that I don’t have to keep WNS free and WNS zone gear separate. None of it has been used east of Colorado.
I have seven helmets, including three sized for children. I have three full sets of vertical gear. I have just one cave pack. I have three coveralls in various weights and condition. I have a bin full of hiking boots of various sizes and conditions.
When I go caving with the kids (and perhaps one of the kid’s friends) we mix and match to see what boots and gear fit, and what gear is in good working condition.
