Surveying a cave is a complex undertaking. It generally involves amateur surveyors working in difficult conditions with little light and in often cramped conditions. A number of books have been written to educate cavers on the techniques involved, but which have gone on to become the definitive resource on the subject?
For this week’s ask cavers question we want to hear which cave surveying book you hold most dear, and what sets it apart from all the others.

Of course it is the one I custom-designed and had rite-in-the-rain print for me. It’s a cool thing to be able to order pages that you like best!
On Station! , bible for surveying.
We had a feeling On Station would be mentioned…
I’m not sure whether this is asking about notebooks or “how to” books. Is there a survey guide other than On Station?
Anthony J. Day’s Cave Surveying, John Burge’s Basic Underwater Cave Surveying, and John Ganter’s A Guide to Cave Mapping are some of the other how to books we found on the subject. No idea how many more there are out there.

I prefer the Rite in the Rain loose leaf binders, however, I recently purchased a bunch of new paper that won’t fit the binders I have, the lock rings have been moved. I guess I’ll have to purchase new binders too.
