55th Annual Bat Flight Breakfast at Carlsbad Caverns
The 55th Annual Bat Flight Breakfast is scheduled for this Saturday, July 21st at Carlsbad Caverns National Park.
Since 1957 visitors have attended the annual event, which encourages the public to observe the thousands of bats that stay in the cave as they circle several hundred feet overhead before diving in clusters into the entrance.
Those interested in participating in the special event are encouraged to be at the bat flight amphitheater by 5:00 am.
When the bat action begins to trail off around 6:00 am, park rangers will be on hand to answer any questions over complimentary coffee. Later, at 6:45 am, park rangers will give a rappelling and rope climbing demonstration to show some of the lengths researchers go to study the tiny flying mammals.
As a bonus, those who arrive before 7:00 am on July 21st will receive free admission to the self-guided portions of Carlsbad Cavern. In addition, the first 120 visitors will also receive tickets for guided lantern tours at 6:30 and 7:00 am.
Not a bat flight breakfast without food, the Carlsbad Caverns Trading restaurant, located in the Visitor Center, will be offering a breakfast meal combo for $7 that includes a breakfast burrito or yogurt parfait, fruit, and a drink.
Leading up to the event, the public is invited to two attend two programs following the bats’ exit flight the night before. Beginning at about 8:45 pm on Friday, July 20, a guided night hike will introduce “Our Nocturnal Neighbors”, while another program called “Bat Chat” will teach people how researchers use special audio equipment to identify bats by their ultrasonic calls.
