The 54th annual Bat Flight Breakfast at the Carlsbad Caverns National Park will take place in the wee hours of the morning on July 16th. Going from 5:00 until 7:00 am, visitors will be able to take in New Mexico’s peaceful early morning skies along with the extraordinary site of thousands of bats returning to the cave after their evening out.

To re-enter the cave the bats often enter spectacular dives from heights of hundreds of feet up, reaching speeds of of 40 km/h (25 mph) or more. Unlike the short evening departure of the bats, their return can last hours as they slowly find their way back to the Carlsbad Caverns National Park.

The Bat Flight Breakfast was started in 1957 as a way to encourage people to take in the morning return of the bats. In contrast with the evening exodus of the bats which draws many people, the morning return is usually very poorly attended.
