Scottish Cave Rescue Saves 83 Year Old Caver

May 15, 2011 / Scotland, United Kingdom, Europe

Cave rescuers were successfully able to retrieve 83 year old Jim Salvona after he fell 5.5 meters (18 feet) into an 6 meter (20 foot) crevice he was exploring while caving at Roslin Glen in Midlothian, just south of Edinburgh. Likely one of the U.K.’s oldest cavers, he slipped on a rope ladder while exiting the cave and landed on his lower back. Because of the way he had fallen, he wasn’t able to sit or lie down, so he stood in the hole while he waited to be rescued.

Alarm was raised by the his wife around 5pm on Tuesday, and he was found at 10:20am Wednesday morning, 16 hours later. Responding the the incident were no less than Lothian and Borders Police, the Scottish Cave Rescue Organisation and an R.A.F. helicopter.

Mr. Salvona known for his “encyclopedic knowledge of every underground feature” is recovering at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with his family.
