Cavers might not be known for singing, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t. In fact, its been a common past time for cavers since at least the 1950’s. The tradition continues today with the NSS holding a yearly cave ballad salon where cavers can submit their works.
Many artists choose to write their own songs completely from scratch, while others choose to instead opt to change the lyrics of popular songs to a more caving centric theme. The nice thing about that, is that it makes it extremely easy to remember them while on your next caving trip.
To have a listen to some of these speleological songs, check out the 2010 NSS salon submissions or check out the previous years entries. If you’re more musically inclined, take a look at the Cave Song Fake Book, Franks Songs written by the late Frank Reid, or if you’re truly dedicated try to dig up one of the many cave song books published over the years.
