Video: Convert a Hard Hat into a Caving Helmet
May 6, 2015
Learn the steps needed to transform a regular everyday hard hat into a pretty spiffy caving helmet, complete with ventilation.
The tutorial, created by conversion master Brandon Labat, shows step by step how to make the transformation.
There’s no telling how to would fare compared to a purpose-built caving helmet, but it likely provides more caving oriented protection than a standard hard hat. It certainly looks the part.

Great you promoting this. Back in the 1960’s we mostly used these helmets as opposed to the coal mining type that some wore. The only thing we had to alter/mod was a bracket to hold the lamp on as we used ex coal board lamp units.
It looks to me like there would be a lose of structural integrity with all the cutting. I have used hardhats with a four point chin strap conversion I purchased from a caving vendor, but I did not perform any other modifications. Someone should do a before and after impact test.
You’re totally right, a test would be very interesting. Perhaps we’ll see that in a follow up video? Anyone?
