How do you know when you’re in over your head and need the help of rescuers?
An incident earlier this week has us wondering where the line is. While it’s important to act quickly, no one wants to a start a cave rescue unnecessarily.

Fortunately, I’ve never had to make a call. When I’m caving, I leave a return time with my “top cover” that is long enough to allow for unforeseen, but non-emergency delays. I also leave a “deadline”, which is usually two hours after my expected return. If the deadline passes, my top cover needs to call the appropriate rescue authorities.
If a call out time is posted and the trip fails to return by that time then rescue is called!
Simples!
