The details of a rescue in South Wales’ Ogof Ffynon Ddu were recently released by the South & Mid Wales Cave Rescue Team.

The report, which gives a very intimate perspective of a cave rescue, describes the December 9th operation to help extract a 43-year-old male caver who had become stuck after he fell into a rift in the Labyrinth area of Ogof Ffynon Ddu II.

Upon reaching the casualty about two hours after he became wedged, the account describes the effective use of feather and wedges to cleave off significant slabs of rock to free him. It then goes on to explain the extraction from the rift – using a sling under his armpits – and his exit from the cave after being stuck for seven hours.

Check out the full report, complete with diagrams, on the South & Mid Wales Cave Rescue Team website.
