A wildfire burning about mile from Carlsbad Caverns National Park has engulfed over 7,000 acres.

The result of a lightning strike, the fire in Lincoln National Forest‘s Horse Canyon is burning just over 5 kilometers (3 miles) Southeast of Queen, New Mexico.

More than 200 firefighters battling the blaze are receiving assistance from helicopters and recent rains which have greatly helped their containment efforts. The blaze is approximately 50 percent contained.

Despite the fire Carlsbad Caverns National Park remains unimpacted with everything running as usual.
