Old Newsreel on Neil Moss Surfaces on Youtube
Recently a short newsreel filmed in March 1959 was uploaded to YouTube. It reports on the plight of caver Neil Moss, a young student who became trapped 305 meters (1,000 feet) underground while exploring England’s Peak Cavern.
Despite the best efforts of the rescuers, Neil lost consciousness as carbon dioxide from his own respiration built up and never regained consciousness. He was declared dead on the morning of Tuesday, March 24th, two days after he became trapped.
At the request of his father, his body was left and the fissure was filled with concrete with an inscription nearby. The area of Peak Cavern is now known as Moss Chamber.
